Housing

Located in the historic district of Cedar Rapids within walking distance of downtown, House of Hope is a beautiful Victorian home with limited housing available for women of all ages.

Who can live at the House of Hope?:

In order for a woman to live at House of Hope she must be enrolled in classes and be able to live on their own without endangering herself or others with no active addictions.

How much does it cost?:

The housing fee is $250.00 per month.  This fee includes a bed, all utilities, some food, laundry and kitchen facility. As there are two twin beds per room, residents may be asked to share a room.

What is expected of the women that live at the House of Hope?:

We ask that residents assist one another and the staff in keeping the house clean.  Each resident will be personally responsible for: cleaning her individual bedroom, washing her dishes and cleaning the kitchen after use, as well as cleaning the bathroom she uses.  She will also be asked to rotate other chores such as vacuuming and dusting.

In addition, we ask that residents participate in at least one class being offered at the House of Hope per session. (Sessions are typically 10-12 weeks long)

How is the staff involved with the residents?:

The staff is at the house weekdays during working hours.  However, staff are not counselors nor are they professionals trained in therapy.  If residents are in need of professional counseling, they should pursue that with an outside agency.  Before being accepted for residency at the House of Hope, the Executive Director will ask to speak with a resident’s therapist to insure that the House of Hope is a safe place for her.

The staff is not available in the evenings or on weekends.

Can residents have visitors?:

We ask the visitors remain on the first floor.  Our policy is that no men are allowed in the house outside of office hours for the safety and comfort level of all residents.

Classes, Seminars, and Events at the House of Hope:

Most of our classes are in the evening and are held on all three levels of the house.  For privacy, residents will want to keep their bedroom doors closed.  We do offer seminars in the evening (usually on the 3rd floor) and on Saturdays.  Several times a year we host events at the House of Hope where the general public attends.

Additional things:

  • No alcohol or drug use.
  • House of Hope does not have cable television but there we do have a TV and DVD player.
  • For the safety of all, we ask that any residents on any medication keep them locked in a store box. We are happy to provide one, if necessary.
  • House of Hope has approximately 70 women throughout the week coming in and out for classes.  Classes are held on the first floor, two rooms on the 2nd floor, and on the 3rd floor.  Those common areas must be kept neat and free of personal items.  All personal items are to be kept in the bedrooms.
